Movie Series and Panel DiscussionsOnce again, the Dufferin Marsh Committee, Arts Society King, Cold Creek Forest and Wildlife Area and the King Township Public Library are working together and sponsoring a series of films and panel discussions related to the environment. Last year's movies included:
This year we've seen "The End of Suburbia" and "Aftermath: The World After Humans". But our next movie is Hurricane Hugo in the Virgin Islands. Hurricane Hugo was a destructive Category 5 hurricane that struck in September 1989, killing over 100 people and leaving more than 50,000 homeless. It caused $10 billion in damages, making it the most damaging hurricane recorded up to that time. Jim Scott, the Director, now a resident of Nobleton, lived through the onslaught of Hugo. As senior search and rescue coordinator in the tiny British Virgin Islands, he found himself working through the monstrous storm with a valiant marine community in their desperate fight for survival as Hugo scored a massive direct hit covering many islands. Join Director, Jim Scott as he presents his documentary that shows first hand the destruction wrought on the local community by the storm, and shows how they responded by joining together to fight for the survival of all rather than self. There will be time for discussion after the screening. Screening starts at 7:00 pm at the Nobleton Public Library. Click here, or on the image to the right to download a printable poster. There is no charge for any of the evenings.
